Vestibular Therapy is performed to reduce problems with dizziness and improve balance-related deficits. Vestibular dysfunction is a disturbance in the body’s balance system and originates from a central or peripheral cause.
Some examples of common vestibular disorders are:
- BPPV (Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo)
- Labyrinthitis or vestibular neuritis
- Meniere’s Disease
- Age-related dizziness and imbalance
- PPPD (Persistent Postural-Perceptual Dizziness)
Common symptoms of vestibular disorders are imbalance or unsteadiness, vertigo (a spinning or whirling sensation), dizziness (light-headed, floating, or rocking sensation), blurred or bouncing vision, and nausea or vomiting.
An initial evaluation consists of:
- Intake interview to gather pertinent medical and social history
- Thorough assessment designed to identify the impairments contributing to symptoms, loss of balance, and limited function
- Establish goals that are individualized and attainable
- Establish appropriate treatment interventions and home program
Treatment is provided by a physical therapist and will be customized to each individual’s needs. This includes:
- Habituation activities
- Canalithic repositioning maneuvers
- Balance retraining activities
- Stretching and strengthening exercises
- Settling techniques to lessen symptoms
