physical therapy boosts quality of life for cancer patients

ROCKFORD — For decades, chemotherapy and radiation have been synonymous with cancer treatment. Officials at the oncology rehab centers in Rockford and Dixon say that in the past 10 to 15 years a third component of treatment has emerged — physical therapy.

“A lot of cancer treatment centers across the country are making physical therapy a part of their protocol,” said Jenna Villafuerte, a physical therapist assistant at ORS Physical Therapy at 2662 McFarland Road in Rockford. “Many cancer patients automatically receive physical therapy. Lance Armstrong had a lot to do with that.”

Courts Reject CMS's Medicare "Improvement Standard"

Two federal district courts have rejected, in two separate cases, the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services' (CMS) contention that the rehabilitation benefit should be restricted to only those patients who are making "improvement". Sometimes known as the "Improvement Standard", the courts found that the Medicare program has improperly denied care based on improper presumption of reasonable and necessary services.

The Medicare Benefit Policy Manual (Publication 100-02) includes language that permits the Medicare program to deny rehabilitation benefits to any beneficiary in therapy that is no longer making improvement or has met his or her maximum potential from therapy. Two recent federal district court decisions have rejected this position, sometimes known as the "Improvement Standard", finding the position unsupportable. The courts relied on regulatory language that states, "a patient may need skilled service to prevent further deterioration or preserve current capabilities" to decide that the denial of coverage could not be affirmed. In one instance a judge stated that the determination of whether skilled services are "reasonable and necessary" is from the "forward-looking vantage point of the physician" and "a patient's chronic or stable condition does not provide a basis for automatically denying coverage for skilled services." The judge noted that stabilization of a beneficiary's health does not render the level of care unnecessary.

The Center for Medicare Advocacy has devoted considerable resources over many years to change CMS policies pertaining to this issue. The Center states that CMS has taken little or no action. The Center is asking to hear from any Medicare beneficiaries who might have been harmed by this policy. Feedback to the Center can be sent to: improvement@medicareadvocacy.org

Rockford, IL - September 2010 - Orthopedic Rehab Specialists Oncology Rehab Program "BUILDING FUTURES" is helping people with cancer improve their quality of life. Our team of oncology rehab therapists, Alane Curry, PT, MTP; Lindsey Nauman, PT, MPT and Jenna Villafuerte, PTA, have advanced training in oncology rehab, allowing them to customize evidence-based programs for their patients. Through all phases of cancer, our aim is to educate, inspire and empower our patients to take an active role in their care, their life and survivorship.

Cancer and cancer treatments including surgery have profound musculoskeletal, functional and cardiovascular effects. Our expert oncology rehab specialists are trained to evaluate and treat pain, cancer-related fatigue, strength deficits, range of motion limitations and soft tissue restrictions. By treating these conditions, patients are more likely to stay on their radiation/chemotherapy schedules without delays, demonstrate improved mobility and strength, experience decreased pain and ultimately improve their quality of life.

Research studies have shown that aerobic exercise helps maintain erthrocyte (red blood cell) levels during radiation treatment and that exercise has been found to be effective in preventing or reducing cancer-related fatigue.

Each of our oncology rehab specialists have been touched by cancer in their families and friends, which drives them further to provide the best care for their patients with compassion, understanding and innovative approaches. ORS is active in the community, working with groups to raise awareness, offer support and provide presentations about the BUILDING FUTURES program and exercise benefits for cancer patients.

Our Services Include:

  • One-on-one patient-centered care
  • Stretching, postural re-education, scar tissue management and manual techniques
  • Lymphedema risk management
  • Cardiovascular strength and endurance training
  • Balance and gait training
  • Injury and fall prevention
  • Patient, family and caregiver education

ORS has physical therapy clinics in Rockford, Byron and Roscoe! For more information on the Oncology Rehab Program at ORS call (815) 277-1700.
